Hiring a Contractor: The Importance of BBB Ratings

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is perhaps the most trusted organization that customers turn to when they need to know if a business is trustworthy. We at RoofCrafters, Inc., are proud to have a consistent A+ BBB rating. In this blog, we discuss how this rating is important for us and, more importantly, for our customers.

Hiring a Contractor: The Importance of BBB RatingsBetter Business Bureau Ratings

The Better Business Bureau has a ratings system that represents their views on how a business should interact with its customers. The ratings range from A+ as the highest to F as the lowest. Sometimes a business may not receive a rating, indicated as NR (“No Rating”), if the business is undergoing a review or if the BBB has insufficient information about them. Customer reviews have a separate star-based ratings system. BBB ratings based on seven rating elements:

  1. Complaint History With the BBB — The BBB takes into account not just the number of customer complaints, but also how the business responds. Timeliness, courtesy and reasonable effort made to resolve the complaint are put into consideration.
  2. Type of Business — If the business is the type that raises marketplace concerns, or if it’s believed to be operating in violation of the law, the rating can be lowered by the BBB.
  3. Time in Business — The BBB takes into account how long the company has been in business. In our case, we have been providing metal roofing and other services to homeowners in Leander for 39 years.
  4. Transparent Business Practices — Transparency in their marketplace conduct, such as listing their complete products and services, and having a legitimate business address and verifiable company ownership can help the company gain a higher rating.
  5. Honoring Commitments to the BBB — Such commitments include abiding by a mediation settlement or arbitration award. Failure to honor these can result in a lower rating.
  6. Licensing and Government Actions Known to BBB — A business has to have the correct licenses and completed all required assessments. Known government actions against the said business can result in a lower rating.
  7. Advertising Issues Known to BBB — If the business has poor advertising such as misuse of BBB trademarks or questionable marketing practices, the ratings may be lowered.
